October 24, 2007Bob Seabury Receives Human Rights Award
Bob Seabury, a member of the Vestry at St. Stephens received the Human Rights Award for Community Service.
Bob developed a coalition of diverse neighbors to create the West Girard Community Council (WGCC) to further their interests in the aftermath of the 27th/Girard community’s successful cross-cultural, cross-economic, cross-social, cross-ethnic/racial efforts to resist the establishment of a McDonald’s in their community. These residents made a clear statement that their community needed and affordable, accessible supermarket offering nutritious foods - not an upscale boutique market or a fast food place - that would draw residents of all races/ethnicities and economic levels to this commonly shared resource.
With gentrification of the area, long-time African American residents were concerned that their interests would be subsumed by incoming higher-income residents and that they would not only be priced out of the housing market, but the healthy foods market as well. To that end, WGCC has actively researched the possibilities and advocated for the introduction of this resource into the West Girard area to further inter-group relations.
Seabury has connected with the city’s Farm-to-City program and established a weekly Farmers Market here, operated by a long-time African American Brewerytown resident. This weekly market is supplemented by WGCC’s joint Share Food Project, which allows residents to purchase fresh foods at a significant discount based on their doing some community service.
WGCC has a community based board of directors supplemented by a board of professional advisors . Seabury has paired the professionals with the residents on a regular basis so that they can gain access to the services these professionals (doctors, researchers, nutritionists, etc.) provide and obtain information about good health practices and prevention activities. The agency’s motto - “Girard Avenue … A New Destination” brings the area to live with its message of hope and unity for all residents.
